Real Terms - Full Set (Art School Live)

We were thrilled to welcome Real Terms back for a triumphant return to Art School Live after their first performance with us back in 2019. We were not disappointed. Tighter and groovier than ever, the math-pop power trio have gone from strength to strength in the intervening years. SET LIST 00:00 - Cacophony 05:09 - Kite 10:47 - A Wall of Milk 16:30 - Weird Arcs 20:33 - Lake Trasimene 26:28 - Absentee 31:54 - Veil is Thinner 37:03 - Frantically Wrong MORE FROM REAL TERMS Formed in 2017 following the dissolution of their previous incarnation, Vasco Da Gama, the trio’s intention with Real Terms was to take the intricate, staccato, highly rhythmic best of their old sound and transcend what they saw as the limitations of the math-rock genre, injecting their material with a dose of pop songwriting structure and melody. The result was their well-received debut 2020 EP Housework, produced by David Berger (Outfit), which saw them marked out as ones to watch by PROG Magazine, Birthday Cake For Breakfast, The Math Rock Times, and Bido Lito Magazine. Whilst the pandemic put paid to live plans for a brief spell, in 2022 the band signed with Sofa Boy Records, the label run by renowned math rock band Delta Sleep. https://realterms.bandcamp.com/ https://realtermsband.com/ MORE FROM ART SCHOOL LIVE Art School Live is a project based at the Manchester School of Art. Hainbach - Full Set (Art School Live)

We were humbled and overjoyed to welcome @Hainbach to the @schoolofdigitalarts earlier in the year. Watch his full set here in full 4K. Based in Berlin, electronic music composer and performer Hainbach creates shifting audio landscapes THE WIRE called "One hell of a trip". Hainbach came to Manchester in March 2022 to film a show in one of our studios at the School of Digital Arts. With support from ondes Martenot player Josh Semans. At the end of the night, Hainbach and Josh decided to do an improvised encore together. They had never played before, and settled on the motto 'From Above' as a jumping off point. This is their improv in full. This is part of the Art School Live (https://www.artschoollive.co.uk) project run out of the Manchester School of Art. Visit the website to see our previous shows/videos. HAINBACH Based out of Berlin, Germany, electro-acoustic composer and “that guy with the sweaters” Hainbach creates experimental music that is both visceral and whimsical. Using esoteric synthesizers, test equipment and magnetic tape he creates one hell of a trip in his improvised live sets. He shares techniques on experimental music on his YouTube channel, which has attracted a regular audience of over 100000 subscribers. His work is uniquely textured, employing a range of instruments, sound-sources, and processes. A keen improviser, his creative process is a cocktail of exploration, repetition, and abstraction. The KTNA - Full Set (Art School Live Festival 2022)

The KTNA's incredible set from Art School Live Festival 2022 in full 4K. We were so privileged to host Millie & Hope for this amazing performance, such a thrill to host them and so happy to be sharing the 4K edit here with visuals by Kenny Ogunneye. More about The KTNA: "The KTNA wear their heart on their sleave and channel an unapologetically strong, northern spirit into their craft. Twin sisters born in Kenya, raised and now residing in Manchester, Hope and Millie Katana weave their candid lyrics around unique productions to create music which demands to be noticed. At 26 they have already achieved more than most, beginning their singing career on CBBC show Clash before catching the attention of TV executives who were quick to cast them in the long running BBC drama, Waterloo Road. However, it was always songwriting that burned the brightest and after some setbacks The KTNA were formed. Their debut EP Life Under Siege, kickstarted their musical project in March 2019, going on to receive support from the likes of Clash, The Fader, tmrw Mag, and BBC 1xtra. Brimming with raw honesty about past trauma whilst also looking optimistically ahead, the project resonated the greatest over the Covid-19 lockdown, as fans sought solace in the themes the EP explored. The KTNA explained, “during this pandemic lots of people have lost their jobs, their freedoms, and sometimes their sanity. Life Under Siege has helped people through this pandemic by making people feel seen, heard, and understood. It has been an outlet for so many to cry too. Sometimes that’s all you need…” Resurgence, The KTNA’s follow up EP (out 22nd September 2021), marks the return of the duo with a new, lighter sound that is both self-written and self-produced. “Resurgence has given us a new lease of life, it’s the start of a new KTNA era.. it’s our first evolution. Although we’re still essentially the same sisters of darkness, we wanted to show the world a more upbeat side of us, a new side, dare we say…a grown woman sultry side!”. Their first single from the project, ‘Can’t Stop It’, rings true to this new approach with a hard-hitting beat and soulful topline sung with their unmistakable Mancunian twang. The track is a realisation moment for the duo, that even with all the setbacks that the pandemic has put upon them they are as driven as ever. Taken as a whole, the EP marks a settled maturity for Hope and Millie after uncertain times, “we’re a little older now and we’re in a different place in our lives. We definitely feel more comfortable being ourselves and it reflects in the music and our visuals.” With this fresh outlook on life and untapped ambition, The KTNA are a force to be reckoned with and look set to turn heads this year. “This time around we aren’t holding back for anyone!”. https://www.thektna.world/ More about Art School Live: Art School Live is a project focussed on bringing live music to the Manchester School of Art. The project is a collaboration between technical staff and students. The shows are carefully curated with hand-picked line-ups and unique branding to make each gig a total one-off. Whenever possible we also engage with visual artists to collaborate with the bands to transform the venue. The project is centred around producing high quality hybrid events that offer industry-standard experience to students.

Kiran Leonard - Full Set (Art School Live)

We were delighted to welcome Kiran Leonard to Studio 8 for a live-streamed session in January 2022. This was the maiden voyage for the brand new studio, and we were really happy to be able to kick things off in such a great way. SET LIST 00:00 - Third Day of February 04:06 - Living With Your Ailments 13:22 - Unreflective Life 18:38 - Body of Worry KIRAN LEONARD The “TRESPASS ON FOOT GROUP” was convened to support Kiran Leonard’s new record of the same name, a record in two 59-minute parts released on double cassette/double CD in October 2021. The first half of Trespass on Foot was recorded alone in six days, consisting of five long pieces for voice, electric guitars, and radio and feedback collages; the second half, with shorter, acoustic songs, was recorded over three years across different houses, with friends contributing strings, woodwind and voices. Inspired by Jonas Mekas’ ‘epic home movies’, the complete record takes the ‘domestic’ as its primary subject matter, and everything that very nebulous word contains: interiority, frontiers, safety, desire for escape, joy, sadness, stasis, changes. This new five-piece is an attempt at finding a midpoint between the noisy electricity and quiet sparseness of discs one and two. The knotty and dense pieces performed by this group – new arrangements of songs from Trespass on Foot and from earlier records – are (as Kiran tells himself) “a bit more like chamber music, actually”. The unique instrumentation of the line-up allows for a broad dynamic range, ranging from quiet, reverberant chord clusters to fractious polyrhythms. First premiered at last year’s End of the Road Festival, Trespass on Foot Group features members of Caroline, Shovel Dance Collective, Dear Laika and Historically Fucked. “One of the UK’s most underrated singer-songwriters” - The Guardian “I tried to find something wrong with it to avoid sounding crazy and hyperbolic in my praise—because how could anything sound this powerful—but I came up empty” - Paste “Typically dense/intense double album from the Saddleworth subversive: one disc of solo guitar and electronics, the other with a chamber group” - Uncut https://kleonard.bandcamp.com/album/t... Magazine by Ellie Walton: "The third performance came from Liverpool’s Indie pop singer and song writer, Natalie McCool. She’s certainly cool by name and cool by nature, as she totally dominated the performance with ease, powerful guitar stances and effortless hair flips. One of her earlier singles ‘Heaven’ was one of the show’s overall highlights. It certainly set a feel-good tone for Friday evening. McCool played a show-stopping selection of tunes, including an exclusive of her new single ‘Take Me to Your Leader’. Behind Natalie and her band, a display of incredible visuals by Robin Clewley featured images of Natalie’s silhouette on sunset beach. I implore you all to go to Art School Live’s YouTube channel and watch her performance. You’ll know exactly why she is an award-winning and BBC playlisted artist." Patty Hearst - Full Set (Art School Live)

We were mega excited to welcome Patty Hearst for our February session in the Holden Gallery (Film Room). Here is their full set in UHD, enjoy. Listen to Patty Hearst's latest single 'Fassbender': https://pattyhearst.bandcamp.com/ Review of the show by Manvir Sohal (MMU Filmmaking Student) Intimacy to performance at gigs are often quite an individualist experience. Especially in the age of technology where you often find most people watching a gig through their phone. A concert where a crowd unanimously have a shared direct connection to the bands performing is very rare. Sometimes even impossible. That short and melodramatic statement brings us to the topic of ‘Chew Magna’ and ‘Patty Hearst’ at The Holden Gallery. It could certainly be defined as an intimate performance. Crammed into a small room that only got hotter the longer the gig went on. It felt like a trendy event that people would go to in an indie film. But what the Holden Gallery’s small room presented was a direct, and sometimes uncomfortable, connection to the performers in front of you. A stray yawn from the audience can be overtly noticed by the band giving their performance everything they’ve got. Similarly, a bored band or poor performance can be explicitly noticed by the audience. This deal cuts both ways. Creating a bind that forces everyone to be their most present selves. ‘Chew Magna’ in a live setting possess a raw style that practically forces you to pay attention to them. Not that it’s a hard task. Distorted guitars and high tempo drums build into a grungy, loud sense of rhythm that only becomes more hypnotic over their shorter, but arresting set. The band’s music, naturally structured to build into heavy breakdowns, suits a live surrounding well where they can only elevate these songs. The band’s musicality came into the foreground frequently, in particular in one musical interlude between songs, creating a more delicate and calm atmosphere. ‘Patty Hearst’ were second on, the band’s sound skews more into a punk edge than ‘Chew Magna’, with a harder 70’s drive in the rhythm. The sound holds deceptively diverse influences though. The vocal style and melodies, often more understated and more emotive than the instruments around them, feel heavily influenced by New Wave music. This blend of influences creates a sound that has a lot of energy in it. One of ‘Patty Hearst’s’ greatest strengths as a live band is performing their music with the same kind of passion and energy. ‘Patty Hearst’ and ‘Chew Magna’ at the Holden Gallery, as a concert, had lots of interesting variables going for it. A space that only heightened the relationship between audience and performer. Bands that, despite the smaller crowd and more intimate setting, still gave their performances so much life. -------------------------- Both Patty Hearst’s ‘Patty Hearst - EP’ and Chew Magna’s ‘The White Hotel’ EP are available on Spotify, Bandcamp and Apple Music.

Bunny Hoova - Full Set (Art School Live)

We were super happy to welcome Bunny Hoova for our December session in the Holden Gallery (Film Room). Here is their full set in UHD, enjoy. You can listen to Bunny Hoova's debut LP here: https://themthere.bandcamp.com/album/longing From Them There records: "Introducing Bunny Hoova. 2019 marks the release of the auspicious debut album ‘LONGING’. Originally from Rotterdam now residing in Manchester, Bunny Hoova has found a comfortable home amidst the city’s burgeoning music scene. Three years in the making LONGING connects her movements from studying at the Conservatory of Amsterdam to her new found home in the Rainy City. Anchored around a slurred, soulful vocal, the 13 tracks interweave treated samples and guitars with spare, low key drums; all glued together by Hoova’s imaginative production. Striking her own wavvy line between garage art-pop and ramshackle soul. Tiny Mix Tapes - “LONGING jukes and jolts, consistently pulling the rug out and offering another fine moment of pop seduction.” Hard to disagree; these sickly sweet vignettes are bona fide songs, and ones of communicable realities and experiences at that, but they never succumb to formula or linearity. AQNB - lusciously unstable jumble of rhythm guitar, beats and percussion that is perfectly lo-fi in its execution." ------------------------------------------ Art School Live is a new series of live-streamed performances and events from around the Manchester School of Art.
